Digital transformation for enhanced port safety and efficiency

Port of Barcelona

Client: APM Terminals Barcelona (Spain)

Challenge: Paper-based and in-person visitor management and safety inductions for both external personnel and internal employees

Solution: Visits Management module and Safety Induction module

APM Terminals Barcelona, one of the main container terminals in the Western Mediterranean, managed its visitor registration and safety induction processes entirely on paper. Both external personnel — such as truck drivers, contractors, and inspectors — and internal employees were required to complete procedures in person, creating long queues, administrative bottlenecks, and inconsistent record-keeping.

Given the high volume of daily activity and the need for strict HSSE compliance, managing these workflows manually made it difficult to maintain accurate data, ensure efficient onboarding, and provide a consistent safety experience across all user types.

To solve this, APM Terminals Barcelona implemented two core Stowlog modules:

  • The Visits Management module, which digitalizes the entire visitor process, enabling online requests, streamlined approvals, and real-time traceability of everyone entering and exiting the facility.
  • The Safety Induction module, allowing both external visitors and internal employees to complete safety training digitally — before arriving at the terminal — ensuring they receive the correct information based on their profile and activity.

With these tools, the terminal transitioned from a fragmented, manual system to a fully digital, standardized, and efficient HSSE workflow that aligns with modern port-logistic operational needs.

Benefits Delivered

  • Full elimination of paper and in-person procedures, significantly reducing administrative workload.
  • Faster and more predictable onboarding, with inductions completed remotely ahead of arrival.
  • Accurate, real-time traceability of all visitors and employees within the facility’s access system.
  • Higher compliance and safety consistency, thanks to standardized digital workflows.
  • Improved user experience for truck drivers, contractors, and internal personnel.
  • Better interdepartmental coordination, as all data is centralized in the Admin Dashboard

APM Terminals Barcelona now operates with a modern, agile, and fully digitalized visitor and induction ecosystem — strengthening safety culture and streamlining daily operations in one of Spain’s most strategic port facilities.
